  • Mixing bowl

Ingredients

For the Cabbage Rolls

  • 1 head Cabbage blanched
  • 1 pound Ground Meat (beef, turkey, or plant-based) lean options preferred
  • 1 cup Rice (white or brown) cooked
  • 1 medium Onion sautéed
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced

For the Tomato Sauce

  • 28 ounces Crushed Tomatoes fire-roasted recommended
  • 6 ounces Tomato Paste can substitute with ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Italian Herbs (oregano, basil) fresh or dried
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar to balance acidity

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Blanch the cabbage leaves for about 2-3 minutes until soft and pliable.
  • In a large bowl, combine ground meat, cooked rice, sautéed onions, and minced garlic. Mix thoroughly.
  • Lay a blanched cabbage leaf flat, spoon filling at the base, and roll it tightly, tucking in the sides.
  • In a saucepan, mix crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian herbs, and sugar. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • In a baking dish, spread a layer of sauce, place cabbage rolls seam-side down, and cover with remaining sauce. Bake at 350°F for about 45-55 minutes.
  • Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. Serve with sour cream or fresh herbs.

Notes

Top with fresh parsley for added flavor and color. A pinch of sugar in the sauce balances the acidity.
