  • 1 loaf French Bread Opt for stale bread for better syrup absorption
  • 2 cups Water Essential for making the sweet syrup

For the Sweet Syrup

  • 2 sticks Cinnamon Infuses the syrup with warm spice
  • 5 whole Cloves Adds aromatic flavor to the syrup

For the Fillings

  • 1 cup Raisins Provides natural sweetness and chewiness
  • 1 cup Pecan Pieces Introduces crunch and nutty flavor
  • 1/2 cup Shredded Coconut Optional for a hint of tropical flavor

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Slice the French bread into ¾-inch pieces and toast them on a baking sheet for about 15 minutes.
  • Combine the water, piloncillo, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until melted, then simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Layer half of the toasted bread in a 13x9 baking dish. Top it with ¼ cup raisins, ¼ cup pecans, and half of the shredded coconut.
  • Repeat the layering process with the remaining ingredients: bread, raisins, pecans, and coconut, reserving ¼ cup of syrup for later.
  • Bake for 15 minutes.
  • Serve warm or cold, drizzling with the reserved syrup.

Notes

Garnish with a sprinkle of toasted coconut for added texture. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
