Instructions

How to Make Fried Green Tomatoes

  • Slice the fresh green tomatoes into thick rounds, about 1/4 inch thick. Liberally season both sides of the slices with salt and pepper.
  • Place the flour in one shallow bowl, and crack the eggs into another. Whisk the eggs together with the hot sauce or water until combined.
  • In a third shallow bowl, combine the cornmeal, panko crumbs, smoked paprika, and any optional spices. Whisk them together.
  • Dip each slice first into the flour, coating both sides thoroughly, then into the egg mixture, ensuring it's fully submerged.
  • Dredge the egg-coated tomato slice into the crumb mixture, pressing gently to ensure the coating sticks well. Place the finished slices on a baking sheet.
  • In a large frying pan, heat oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F to 375°F. Test the oil readiness by dropping a small breadcrumb in.
  • Carefully add the coated tomato slices to the hot oil, frying each slice for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  • Transfer the slices to paper towels or a wire rack to drain excess oil. Keep them warm in an oven preheated to 250°F until serving.
