For the Casserole

  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil Used for cooking the turkey; substitute with any neutral oil for similar results.
  • 1 pound Ground Turkey Main protein source; using leftover roasted turkey can save you time.
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt Enhances the overall flavor; adjust according to dietary needs or preferences.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter Provides richness to the sauce; can be replaced with olive oil to keep it dairy-free.
  • 1 medium Yellow Onion Adds a hint of sweetness; shallots make a great alternative.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Minced; fresh delivers the best taste.
  • 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour Thickens the sauce; consider using gluten-free flour.
  • 2 cups Low-Sodium Chicken Broth Liquid base for the sauce.
  • 1 cup Whole Milk Provides creaminess; substitute with any plant-based milk.
  • 2 cups Broccoli Florets Fresh or thawed frozen broccoli, well-drained.

Instructions

How to Make

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a 9x13-inch baking dish by greasing it.
  • In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat, then add the ground turkey and a pinch of salt. Cook until browned for about 5-7 minutes. Set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt butter and add the diced onion. Sauté until soft, around 4-5 minutes, then add minced garlic for another 30 seconds.
  • Sprinkle in flour and cook for 1 minute. Whisk in the broth and milk; let simmer until slightly thickened, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Incorporate broccoli into the sauce and simmer until bright green, about 2-3 minutes. Stir in cheddar cheese until melted.
  • In the baking dish, combine the cooked turkey and rice. Pour in the cheese sauce with broccoli and mix well. Top with remaining cheddar.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  • Allow the casserole to rest for a few minutes before serving.
