For the Base

  • 8 ounces French bread Cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter Melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar Packed

For the Custard

  • 5 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon

For the Topping

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and grease a 13×9-inch baking dish.
  • Melt the unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat and stir in packed brown sugar until fully dissolved. Pour into the greased baking dish.
  • Layer the 1-inch cubes of French bread over the caramel base, pressing down gently.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Pour over the bread cubes and let soak for 10 minutes or refrigerate overnight.
  • Sprinkle the remaining 2 teaspoons of cinnamon and 1 1/2 tablespoons of brown sugar over the top before baking.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and firm in the center.
  • Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Top with powdered sugar, fresh berries, or maple syrup.

Notes

For best results, use slightly stale bread and refrigerate overnight for richer flavor.
