For the Cake

  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter softened
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/4 cup Honey or agave syrup
  • 3 large Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract use pure for best results
  • 1 cup Nonfat Plain Greek Yogurt or sour cream
  • 1 cup White Whole Wheat Flour or all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda ensure fresh
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • 1 cup Milk any type

For the Frosting

  • 8 oz Reduced-Fat Cream Cheese or full-fat
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar adjust to taste

For Decoration

  • 1 cup Fresh Blueberries or raspberries
  • 1 cup Sliced Fresh Strawberries or other seasonal berries

How to Make American Flag Cake

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a stand mixer, cream together softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar until fluffy. Add honey, eggs, and vanilla, mixing well. Incorporate Greek yogurt until smooth.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together white whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, and kosher salt until well mixed.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with milk. Mix until smooth.
  • Spread the batter in a greased baking pan. Bake for 18-22 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Beat the reduced-fat cream cheese with softened butter, powdered sugar, Greek yogurt, and vanilla until smooth.
  • Once cooled, spread the cream cheese frosting on top and arrange blueberries and strawberries in a flag pattern.
  • Garnish with additional berries for extra color if desired.

Notes

Allow cake to cool completely before frosting to prevent melting.
