  • 1 loaf Challah Bread ~1.5 lbs, preferably day-old
  • 5 large Eggs for custardy filling
  • 1.5 cups Milk whole or low-fat
  • 4 tablespoons Brown Sugar 2 for filling + 2 for topping
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract for flavor enhancement
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon adds warmth
  • 0.25 teaspoon Nutmeg for depth of flavor
  • 0.25 teaspoon Sea Salt balances sweetness

How to Make French Toast Casserole

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with unsalted butter or coconut oil.
  • Cut your day-old challah bread into cubes and layer them evenly in the greased dish.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sea salt until well combined.
  • Pour the custard mixture evenly over the cubed bread. Cover and refrigerate if preparing the night before, or let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  • Drizzle the melted butter on top and sprinkle with brown sugar and chopped pecans.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 35 minutes, then remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-20 minutes until golden brown.
  • Allow the casserole to stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes
