Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 3 cups All-Purpose Flour High-protein flour like King Arthur gives the best results.
  • 1 tbsp Sugar Adds a hint of sweetness.
  • 1 tbsp Instant Dry Yeast For quick rise; use active dry yeast if preferred.
  • 1 tsp Salt Enhances flavor.
  • 1 cup Plain Yogurt Can substitute with sour cream for richness.
  • 2 tbsp Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Can use any neutral oil.
  • 1 cup Warm Water Ensure it's around 100°F (38°C) for best results.

For the Finishing Touches

  • 2 tbsp Melted Salted Butter Enhances flavor of the naan.
  • 2 tbsp Chopped Fresh Parsley Optional; for garnish.

For Optional Flavor Enhancements

  • 1 tsp Anise Seeds Optional; swap for sesame seeds if preferred.

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, instant dry yeast, sugar, salt, and optional anise seeds until well combined.
  • In another bowl, whisk the plain yogurt, extra-virgin olive oil, and warm water together. Slowly mix this blend into the dry ingredients.
  • Use a fork to combine the mixture until it forms a shaggy dough. Knead gently on a floured surface until the dough is smooth, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Cover the kneaded dough with plastic wrap and place it in a warm spot to rise for 1 to 1½ hours, until it has doubled in size.
  • Once risen, turn it out onto a floured surface, divide into six equal portions, and shape them into balls.
  • Preheat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Roll each dough ball out into an oval shape, about ⅛-inch thick.
  • Place the rolled-out naan in the hot skillet. Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  • Brush the freshly cooked naan with melted salted butter and sprinkle chopped parsley on top if desired.
